Mk6 GTI: Sweet As Candy

Mk6 GTI

There is just as much a time and place for gaudy, showy, and ridiculous as there is for subtle, clean, and tasteful. Some people choose to go with flashy, large modifications while others go for the simple and sometimes unnoticeable ones. Within the few years, the word “clean” has really been emphasized across both the JDM and Euro car scenes, inspiring people to modify their cars so it looks like it came from the factory that way. Many people will use OEM parts from another model of the same make in order to modify their car subtly and keep it “clean”. This look is known as “OEM+” (or OEM plus), implying that the mods are slightly more than factory but the vehicle overall still looks OEM. Before you lies a great example of an OEM+ look with a few more modifications. John Williamson’s remarkably deceptive Mk6 GTI may appear to only have suspension and wheels in its repertoire but has a spec list bordering on the absurd.

Outfitted with OEM Euro parts and stock parts from other VW models, the attention to detail on John’s Mk6 GTI is staggering; if I offered you a million dollars to pick out all of the changes both inside and out, let’s just say you wouldn’t be a millionaire. In fact, I’ll just let the spec list speak for itself because I know I would be here all night trying to enumerate all the intricacies of this beauty.

Obviously, the first thing you notice about this car is the beautiful white on white exterior. You won’t see too many cars that can pull off the look THIS well, either. The combination of white with hints of black around the car make one killer look to compliment that mean looking Mk6 front end. John made a great wheel choice in the classic Schmidt TH-Lines then sweetened the deal with Candy White, color-matched faces, polished lips and polished bolts. He then staggered the wheels, running 17×8.5″ (et34) fronts and 17×9” (et28) rears. And what better suspension to match with a quality wheel setup than an Airlift bag setup with digital management? This allows a fantastic stance where the TH-Lines are neatly tucked on all 4 corners.

This car, however, is still a work in progress, shaping up to be a knockout from bumper to bumper and intake to exhaust. John still has a plethora of parts to go on his Mk6, ranging from Euro front and rear bumpers to engine upgrades. The car is going to undergo a Stage 3 K04 upgrade and software, compliments of APR Tuning, Volkswagen’s aftermarket software of choice. If you would like to see a history of the car up to current (including pictures of all added parts so you aren’t left wondering), you can check out his thread on VWvortex.com by clicking HERE. I have to say, looking at the thread really boosted my respect for John after seeing all the OEM Euro/other model parts he collected and installed!
