One of the more interesting aspects of the online automotive community I enjoy following are the ebbs and flows of a particular model’s popularity. For example, 2012 was the year of the Toyota 86 and it’s brethren. But that made sense, there were three new models that were aimed squarely at enthusiasts. Of course they blew up, and of course every shop was building one. But the recent popularity of the 911 has been much more organic. (A disclaimer: The 911 is obviously one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, and talking about its popularity seems trivial, but bear with me.) This resurgence of interest, from my vantage point, has come from the equally amazing, but completely different, approaches of Magnus Walker (Urban Outlaw) and Nakai-San (Rauh-Welt). These two builders have injected creative energies into this car that opened up a new audience to the model.
Brian Lee’s 911 is styled completely different than either of those approaches, opting for a GT2 inspired look. He used Getty Design Clubsport RSR flares and sideskirts to widen the body, making room for the 18×9 & 18×12 Kinesis Motorsport Supercups. The interior has been upgraded with a pair of Recaro Leather Pole Positions with Recaro Brackets and Recaro Sliders, Rennline Aluminum E-Brake Handle, and a DAS 4-pt. roll cage. The car is motivated by a 4.0L bored out and built motor and Cup intake kit, while a set of Bilstein PSS9 coilovers keep that power firmly planted to the ground.

On Saturday July 12th our good friends over at BlockstarCars are opening the doors to their premier shop for professional automotive services, aftermarket products, and accessories. We’ve setup our first ever pop-up shop inside and will be opening that up as well. The first time Jerome Cruz’s Volkswagen Jetta caught my attention was over two years ago. For the following years I’d see it at shows and in passing, but never had the ability to set up a full shoot. There was always something about this build that caught my attention, though, whether that be the unique paint or specialty euro parts… it’s tough to point out a favorite part.
Wekfest LA came and went, but let me just say the quality of cars out there was beyond amazing. We made the trip with a handful of local friends and made the best of it! Right now we are just waiting till August. Last year Wrong Fitment Crew threw its first annual “Wrong Fitment Fest.” They held this event as a big meet instead of an official show, just a big hang out for everyone who wanted to come. This meet is about good times, good hangs, checking out some awesome cars, catching up with a bunch of good friends, and of course making new friends. Wrong Fitment Fest takes place in beautiful Oceanside, California, which was a nice break from the one hundred plus temperatures most of us are use to in the Valley.
Time and time again, we stumble upon cars that really break the mold. Cars and owners that are doing things that we would never expect to be done seem to become more scarce every year. Robbie and his ’98 Subaru Forester have done exactly that. This generation of Subaru’s family hauler wagon takes the brunt of the negativity surrounding its existence. When I first saw photos of Robbie’s car scattered across various social media outlets, I knew right away this car was something special.

With the Fitted 2014 crew acquiring more than double the floor space over last year’s venue they somehow managed to up the actual quality of the venue and cars over the previous iteration as well. While still being one of the smaller events on the calendar they make up for it with a level of diversity and car quality that easily contends with large events. Euros and imports living comfortably side-by-side with stanced and race inspired builds. See… we can all get along.
Down South in the magical city of Miami it’s easy to get caught up in the lavish atmosphere, beautiful beaches, women, exotic rides, and making sure you’re always bringin’ your best. For Jose Diaz the intentions were there, and once a little bit of inspiration came along after moving to Miami from New York his EK Civic took form to something worthy of surpassing Miami’s standards.
A warm 80 degrees and an offshore breeze is a great combination for a car show. Wekfest LA kicks off the year with yet again another awesome show at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, with Canibeat posted up right in the middle of all the madness. This year the theme was RED. Red ruckus, Red DC2 (Integra) and a Red FRS 86. With the Long Beach skyline in the background you couldn’t have asked for a better backdrop. This year we tried to enjoy the show a little more so we talked and met with a lot more people. Surprisingly this year Wekfest LA gave us all a little bit more room to breathe. Giving us quality over quantity, you were able to walk around more and set up your shot for the perfect Instagram post.
On May 31, Formula Drift returned to Florida for Round 3: Miami Heat. This was Formula Drift’s third visit to Florida, but this time in a new location. In 2012 and 2013, Palm Beach International Raceway hosted the series, but 2014 brought Round 3 to Homestead-Miami Speedway. This facility hosts NASCAR, IndyCar, Grand Am, and now the Formula Drift Series in an expansive multi-track venue. The event utilized the infield road course starting at turn 2 and completing each run at turn 5. Vaughn Gittin Jr. earned victory over Chris Forsberg in the final round. This was Gittin’s second win in a row after taking home the victory at Round 2: Road Atlanta. Finishing third behind Gittin and Forsberg was Kenny Moen. This event was a fresh breath for the increasingly large amount of fans and a new challenge for the lineup of drivers. While learning the new track, teams and drivers practiced and adapted to the unfamiliar setup. The Saturday competition was strong and the energy was high. Florida’s heat persisted all day, but the threat of rain held off and the skies remained clear and the track stayed dry. Please enjoy our video coverage from Round 3: Miami Heat.
